Understanding PTSD

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder can develop after experiencing or witnessing trauma such as military combat, serious accidents, abuse or neglect, sexual assault, natural disasters, or the loss of a loved one. Persistent symptoms—vivid flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, and heightened anxiety—can significantly disrupt daily life.

Many people with PTSD use alcohol or drugs to cope with overwhelming emotions or to avoid painful memories. Over time, this can create a cycle in which PTSD and substance use worsen each other. Recognizing this connection is essential for effective, integrated care.

Evidence-Based Therapies for PTSD

Thrive Medical provides brief, goal-focused support in the clinic and coordinates referrals to specialized trauma programs for longer-term care. Our approach helps patients process trauma safely, reduce symptoms, and regain functioning.

We use CBT-informed strategies to identify triggers, challenge unhelpful beliefs, and practise coping skills (e.g., grounding, thought reframing, exposure planning). When a full trauma-focused CBT course is appropriate, we make a warm referral to community trauma clinicians.

PE uses gradual, structured exposure to trauma memories and avoided situations to reduce fear and avoidance. Because PE requires a dedicated protocol, we refer to trained trauma specialists and support readiness, safety planning, and follow-through.

EMDR employs bilateral stimulation (e.g., guided eye movements) to help reprocess traumatic memories and lessen their emotional impact. We coordinate referrals to certified EMDR providers and collaborate on stabilization as needed.

We teach DBT-informed skills—emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and mindfulness—to improve day-to-day coping and reduce crises. For comprehensive DBT (individual therapy plus skills group), we arrange referrals and coordinate with the treating team.

All care at Thrive Medical is trauma-informed: we emphasize safety, choice, collaboration, and pacing to minimize re-traumatization and support engagement in treatment.

The Impact of Co-Occurring Mental Health Problems and Mental Disorders

PTSD rarely exists in isolation. Many individuals with PTSD also experience co-occurring mental health disorders and substance use disorders. It is common for people living with PTSD to use alcohol or drugs as a way to manage distressing symptoms such as intrusive memories, anxiety, and sleep disturbances. Unfortunately, this coping strategy can lead to addiction, which may worsen PTSD symptoms and make recovery more challenging.

Recognizing this complex relationship, Thrive Medical provides integrated support that addresses both PTSD and substance use together. In our RAAM setting, we offer brief, evidence-based strategies and medication support within scope, and coordinate warm referrals to specialized trauma and addiction services for ongoing care. This integrated approach helps patients develop healthier coping skills and reduces relapse risk.

Medication Management

While therapy is the main treatment for PTSD, medication can play an important role in managing symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbances. At Thrive Medical, we provide short-term support within scope and collaborate with primary care and psychiatry for ongoing prescribing. We also discuss medication safety in the context of substance use (e.g., cautious use of sedatives).
