What is Fentanyl?

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. It belongs to a class of drugs known as opioid analgesics and is used as a prescription pain reliever. In unregulated street forms, it is one of the leading causes of overdose deaths across Canada. Many illegal drugs, including counterfeit pills, may contain fentanyl, increasing the risk of overdose. Because potency and content are unpredictable, we prioritize overdose prevention, naloxone education, and evidence-based medications that reduce withdrawal and cravings.

How We Treat Fentanyl Addiction

At Thrive Medical’s RAAM clinic, care focuses on rapid stabilization, opioid agonist therapy (OAT), brief counselling, and harm-reduction—so you can reduce withdrawal, control cravings, and lower overdose risk.

Before beginning fentanyl addiction treatment, we complete a same-day or next-day assessment of:

  • Substance use history
  • Current physical and mental health status
  • Risk factors and medical concerns

This helps us confirm the best starting plan for you.

We start evidence-based medications for opioid use disorder:

  • Buprenorphine/naloxone (Suboxone®): Often first-line. When appropriate, we can use low-dose (micro-induction) to reduce precipitated withdrawal in the fentanyl era.

  • Methadone: A full agonist used when clinically indicated, with careful titration for comfort and safety.

Note: Physician services and core RAAM care are OHIP-insured. Prescription coverage depends on eligibility (e.g., ODB/Trillium/private insurance); we help you navigate options.

We provide symptom support, naloxone education, and overdose-prevention guidance. We also review safer-use strategies and crisis/safety planning as needed.

We offer brief, goal-focused counselling to identify triggers, strengthen coping skills, and build a practical relapse-prevention plan. When longer-term or group/family therapy is helpful, we coordinate referrals to community programs.

We schedule regular follow-ups to monitor progress and adjust medication. Most patients take witnessed daily doses at a community pharmacy, with take-home doses considered when clinically appropriate.

At Thrive Medical, we provide short-term stabilization. Once you’re stable, we hand off maintenance care to a community OAT provider or primary care, with warm referrals and clear next steps.

Benefits of Fentanyl Addiction Treatment

  • Reduced Withdrawal Symptoms – Patients experience less severe nausea, anxiety, insomnia, and pain.
  • Lower Risk of Relapse – Stabilization makes it easier to commit to ongoing recovery, which also lowers the risk of drug overdose deaths, especially those involving potent synthetic opioids like fentanyl.
  • Safe Medical Environment – All treatment is monitored to prevent misuse.
  • Improved Quality of Life – Patients regain control over their health, relationships, and future.
  • Treats chronic pain: Provides options for managing severe pain safely when needed.
  • Support services: Offers counselling and mental health support tailored to individual needs.

By using fentanyl in a structured treatment plan, patients can safely step away from illicit opioid use.

Choosing the Right Treatment for Fentanyl Dependence

While buprenorphine/naloxone (Suboxone®) is often first-line and methadone is appropriate for some patients, we tailor care to your goals and medical needs. In select cases, low-dose (micro-induction) of buprenorphine may be used to minimize precipitated withdrawal in the fentanyl era. When specialized options (e.g., other OAT programs) are indicated, we coordinate referrals. Every plan is personalized and reviewed with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Suboxone® (partial agonist) and methadone (full agonist) are prescribed and monitored to reduce withdrawal and cravings and lower overdose risk compared with unregulated fentanyl.

Medication works best with counselling, relapse-prevention planning, and community programmes (e.g., groups, family supports) when needed.

Treatment duration varies but is generally short-term, designed to stabilize patients before tapering off and transitioning to other supports at a pace that fits their goals.

Yes—when clinically supervised. We use careful dosing, regular follow-ups, and pharmacy-based witnessed dosing when appropriate to support safety.

Our clinicians complete a focused assessment of your health, substance use, and goals, then recommend the option most likely to help you stabilize.

Once stable, we provide a warm hand-off to a community OAT provider and refer to longer-term counselling or group supports as desired.

Medication tapering is done gradually under medical supervision to minimize withdrawal symptoms and ensure a smoother transition.

OAT cuts cravings, reduces use of the unregulated supply, and lowers overdose risk. We also provide naloxone training and harm-reduction education.

Fentanyl is a high-potency and common in the unregulated drug supply. Rapid OAT initiation, overdose-prevention tools, and coordinated supports help prevent harm and sustain recovery.
