Understanding Kratom Addiction

Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a herbal substance derived from a tree native to Southeast Asia. While some people use it to boost energy or relieve pain, kratom acts on the brain’s opioid receptors, producing both stimulant and sedative effects depending on the dose.

With continued use, kratom can cause tolerance, physical dependence, and withdrawal symptoms similar to opioids. Many individuals begin using kratom to manage chronic pain or withdrawal from other substances, but find themselves trapped in a new cycle of dependency.

Treatment Options We Offer

At Thrive Medical, our treatment for kratom addiction follows the same principles as our other opioid and substance use programs: quick access, compassionate care, and personalized medical support.

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) may be recommended for individuals experiencing withdrawal or dependence on kratom. Although kratom is not officially approved for medical use in Canada, its withdrawal effects often resemble mild opioid withdrawal.

When appropriate, our clinicians may prescribe Suboxone® (buprenorphine/naloxone) to help reduce cravings, stabilize mood, and manage withdrawal symptoms safely.

MAT at Thrive Medical is:

  • Medically supervised to ensure safe dosage and monitoring
  • Customized to your symptoms and goals
  • Flexible — designed to support outpatient recovery while you continue your daily life

Our goal is to help you feel stable, reduce the urge to use, and focus on rebuilding your health.

Substance use affects both the body and mind. Thrive Medical’s approach includes brief, evidence-based counselling to help patients understand their triggers and develop healthier coping strategies.

Our team provides:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to identify and change thought patterns linked to substance use
  • Motivational Interviewing (MI) to strengthen readiness for recovery
  • Trauma-informed care for patients with past emotional or physical trauma
  • Relapse-prevention planning to reduce the risk of returning to use

Our behavioural health support is short-term and practical, focused on helping you stabilize and prepare for longer-term counselling or therapy if needed.

Thrive Medical’s care doesn’t stop after your first appointment. We provide ongoing coordination and follow-up to ensure you have the right supports in place.

This may include:

  • Linking you to primary care providers for physical health follow-up
  • Connecting you to community resources such as outpatient counselling, peer recovery groups, or mental health programs
  • Assisting with social services when housing, employment, or financial stress contributes to substance use

Our team works closely with community partners to make sure you have continued access to care and recovery supports beyond the RAAM clinic.

We know that life doesn’t pause for treatment. Thrive Medical’s outpatient model allows you to receive care that fits your schedule, whether you’re managing work, school, or family responsibilities.

With flexible appointment options, you can:

  • Meet with a healthcare provider quickly, often within a few days
  • Access follow-up care without overnight stays or inpatient admission
  • Receive ongoing support while maintaining your daily routine

Our clinic provides a supportive and non-judgmental environment designed to make recovery accessible and sustainable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a herbal product derived from the leaves of a tree native to Southeast Asia. It contains active compounds that act on the brain’s opioid receptors, producing stimulant effects at low doses and sedative or opioid-like effects at higher doses.

While kratom is not a traditional opioid like morphine or heroin, it binds to the same opioid receptors in the brain. This is why it can produce similar effects — including pain relief, euphoria, and, over time, dependence and withdrawal.

Withdrawal symptoms can include fatigue, anxiety, irritability, sweating, nausea, body aches, insomnia, and mood swings. These are similar to mild opioid withdrawal and can be managed safely with medical support.

Treatment is individualized. Some patients benefit from Suboxone® (buprenorphine/naloxone) to reduce withdrawal and cravings. Others may receive short-term non-addictive medications for sleep, anxiety, or nausea. All medications are prescribed under medical supervision.

Although rare, overdose can occur — especially when kratom is combined with other sedatives, opioids, or alcohol. Symptoms may include slowed breathing, confusion, extreme drowsiness, or loss of consciousness. Seek emergency care immediately if these occur.

No standardized or safe dose has been established. Kratom products are unregulated, and their potency can vary widely, increasing the risk of side effects and contamination.
